team design process
The team used four design phases to separate work and create milestones in the project to ensure success. These design phases are described in more detail below.
Conceptual Design
Conceptual Design allowed the team to establish goals and determine stakeholder needs. Design Drivers were formed which encompassed the needs of the client.
Design Audit
Design Audit allowed the team to evaluate the chosen architectural form in more detail relating to building systems. System selection occurs in this step as well as full architectural plans and drafting.

Schematic Design
Schematic Design consisted of the major architectural redesign and evaluation. Architectural forms were computationally evaluated to determine the most balanced architectural design that could have the greatest positive impact on final building performance.
Design Development
Design Development consisted of a deeper investigation and design of building systems. Space by space integration between systems was a large focus in this step. Building façade solutions were iterated and computationally evaluated against thousands of solutions resulting in a highly engineered building skin.
Data-informed design
The team relied on the use of cutting edge technology to make informed decisions that looked past "rule of thumb" design guides to achieve a high-performance lower/middle school.
01 Simulate
The use of parametric tools to simulate thousands of different design possibilities lays the groundwork for the following steps. This simulation is completed using parametric design tools such as Grasshopper with analysis engines like Ladybug Tools and Karamba.
02 Interpret
Designs are synthesized into data that can be interpreted into trends understandable to designers. These trends and relationships between inputs and outputs allow designers to understand the impact and weight of their decisions on building performance.
03 Design
The trends from Step 02 are taken into consideration resulting in a design that is informed by data. This data-informed design increases confidence that the final solution is the highest performing possible design due to the exhaustive exploration of data.
