Iconic Skytower Competition

A design competition to design a overlook tower and experience center in the Great Smoky Mountains.

The interior lighting concept takes cues from the experience that a leaf has during its life-cycle. The rectangular wall openings are a metaphor for the concealed nature of a budding leaf. These openings can transmit light, but will not give occupants an idea of the outside condition, keeping the upward ascent a mystery to the views outside.

When light interacts with a tree canopy, it navigates its way between the many leaves in the canopy. As an observer moves around this canopy, the lighting effect changes, which is the inspiration for the exterior facade lighting. As you move around the tower, the facade responds by becoming dimmer in some areas and brighter in others.
